From the recording Elm Snow from "Garden Suite" for String Quartet
Inspired by the visual image of falling Elm Snow, the way it swirls and dances, sometimes slow, sometime fast... always graceful. I was playing with the idea of taking an entire piece to present one long musical line. I also heard this long line being presented in a very improvisatory manner. Even though every note is written down, the notation I used gives the performers a lot of freedom in interpretation, so this movement will sound as if it was ‘improvised,’ and will be different in each performance.
